Diorama Ocean – As we explored habitats, we made habitat dioramas. When we explore marine life, we make a cardboard aquarium that looks like this (from Bestdiasphorkids)
This project is a 5 step process. Kids under 7 or 8 can’t do this alone, but it’s a great project for parent-child collaboration.
Diorama Ocean
You can use a shoe box without a lid, or you can cut the front out of a cereal box or other box and then lift it up on one side to look like an aquarium. If you have a large, sturdy box, you can cut some portholes in the ends like Molly Moo did. You can choose to paint the outside of the box or wrap it with paper to make the finished product more beautiful.
Ocean Resin Diorama
Stick some aquarium gravel and some shells in the bottom of the ‘tank’ – it looks pretty but helps keep the box from tipping over. Blown paint or Styrofoam “coral” can make a fun floor, but you’ll need to add some rocks to add weight.
Decorate the back of the tank with a piece of paper. One way is to use oil pastels to paint plants and fish tank decor. Next, dissolve Epsom salts in warm water and mix with liquid blue watercolor (or food coloring). When the paint dries, you can see the salt glitter. (You can use glitter, but we don’t want to for environmental reasons.)
You can also make a collage with blue and green paper squares, or tear up blue and green paper to stick on, or use plain blue paper and cut out green plants to stick on it. Or you can make plants out of pipe cleaners like Instructables. However you choose it!
Easy Ocean Diorama Craft Project For Kids Rainy Day Activity
You can search for “fish coloring pages” online, cut the images to size, print and color with glitter gel pens. Alternatively, you can cut a fish out of shiny origami paper. Or paint Styrofoam balls or egg shapes and add wings and tails. Or you can use a toy fish like Jamonkey.
Tape the rod (or thread or floss) to the fish. Next, poke holes or slits in the top of the aquarium, thread fishing wire through the holes, and tie the wire to a button or large bead to prevent it from slipping back through the hole. They can then hold the button and pull up to raise the fish or lower the fish back. This photo by madebyjoel illustrates this mechanism.
Also, you can cut long slits in the top so that the fish can slide up and down to move through the tank like Molly Moo does. You may need to reinforce the cardboard.

Optional: Some people cover the front of the aquarium with clear plastic or saran wrap, simulating glass like Aspiration Crafts does.
Here are the steps that my co-teacher Cimbric explained when she made her fabric covered box: Cut the front of the box, cut slits for the top of the box. The box is covered with fabric. It’s a great opportunity for young children’s imaginations to run wild and create a whole new world. In this diorama, we used a shoebox as a blank sheet to create an underwater scene with sea creatures and underwater plants. You can give your little ones a blank slate like a shoebox with some craft supplies and verbal prompts and see what they come up with! It doesn’t have to be perfect, the important thing is that young children learn through touch and using their imagination or what they know about different environments. We applied, cut and pasted a paper background for the water and sand. You can use paint and paint the background. Let dry before continuing!
To add depth to our scene we made some coral reefs out of construction paper. To do this, fold the bottom of the mound 1/4 inch so you can glue it to the box in various places.
We created some more underwater plants by cutting different plant shapes out of construction paper and decorating them with markers.
