The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is one of the driest places in the world – in many years it receives no rain. For farmers to survive and thrive, they will need water and nutrients in the soil that will never run out.

However, people lived in the Atacama, long before modern technology. Water scarcity was addressed by using water from oases and complex irrigation systems. For soil nutrients, the solution they encountered – centuries before the arrival of the Inca around 1450 – was to bring high-quality fertilizers from the coast in the form of seabird excrement, or “guano”.

This is what we found in our new study, in which we analyzed the remains of 246 plants and wild plants found in 14 archaeological sites in the Atacama. These plants last about 3,000 years with several ancient civilizations, followed by the Inca, and finally the European colonial period until 1800.

One way to determine if guano was used to reproduce these ancient plants is to look at the concentration of nitrogen isotopes (15N/14N) in the plant remains. The two isotopes differ in atomic mass, but therefore behave slightly differently in biological processes and can act as biological, biochemical tracers. We know that even small amounts of seabird guano fertilization have a significant effect on nitrogen isotopic concentrations in modern corn, raising them beyond what is possible naturally or using any other fertilizer. When we looked at the fossils of ancient crops, such as corn, squash and peppers, we also found high levels of isotopes in plants dating back to around 1000 AD.

The nitrogen isotopes found in the bones of people from this region, well preserved in a dry environment, also changed significantly compared to the seeds. Scientists initially thought this indicated that people ate fish from the sea. Marine fish can have high levels of nitrogen isotopes, especially those found off the coast of Chile due to the cold and rich waters of the Humboldt Sea. Our research found that the ancient people of Atacama obtained high levels of nitrogen isotopes from fish – except that it was not direct, through seabirds that ate the fish and removed it as guano, which became fertilizer for crops.

Our research also found that not everyone seems to have access to this high-quality fertilizer. Although there was evidence that nitrogen isotopes increased significantly in corn from AD1000 onwards, indicating a significant increase in yield and allowing more space to grow, other grains lacked this evidence. Instead they show signs of other fertilizers such as green compost or the feces of llamas and their relatives.

Bones from the same and contemporaneous burials also showed significant variation in their nitrogen isotope levels, suggesting that access to manure crops was not evenly distributed throughout the area. It may be that some families or clans had access to the coast (a distance of 90km) and were able to find seabirds and use them as a source of power and prestige. The desert spread – but to some more than others.

Guano’s popularity continued into Inca and colonial times. At the beginning of the 19th century, it gained worldwide recognition as an excellent fertilizer and became an important source of income for Peru (of which the Atacama was a part). Hundreds of thousands of tons are sent abroad every year, mainly to the United States and western Europe – it was at that time that guano was known as “white gold”.

The importance of Guano disappeared soon after, first with the new resource of the Atacama Desert, saltpeter (sodium nitrate), which was widely mined, and then with the introduction of cheap fertilizers in the early 20th century. Guano fertilizers have been used again in organic farming, but in Chile it is now forbidden to extract fresh guano, and all the seabirds and waterfowl that produce it are protected by law.

The bioregion of South American Coastal Deserts, which is located in the South American (Neotropical) area, consists of a small area west of the Andes, which extends along the coast of Peru and northern Chile. It has two dry areas – the Atacama Desert (598), the Dry Desert (608) – and the neighboring areas of the Pacific. The national area of this bioregion is around 29 million hectares.

The bioregion of South American Coastal Deserts is part of the Andes and Pacific Coast subregion and consists of two regions: (1) Sechura Desert (2) Atacama Desert.

Atacama Desert & Bolivia Salt Flats Tour

The Atacama Desert is the driest desert in the world, and the only desert that receives less rain than the polar deserts. In fact, it is so dry that some climates in the desert have never recorded a single drop of rain. Due to these harsh conditions, plants and animals disappear, especially in the lower Atacama Desert. The coastal areas in the north, however, receive more rain, and because of this, they are very dry.

The diversity of the Atacama desert is very limited. Some desert areas are too dry to support any form of life. Scorpions, desert butterflies, and wasps, Atacama frogs, lizards, lizards, etc., are some of the animals of the Atacama desert. Birds that visit or live in the desert include sparrows, hummingbirds, Andean flamingos, Humboldt penguins, etc. Seals and sea lions can be seen along the beach.

The Atacama Desert contains the largest concentration of sodium nitrate in the world, which makes it very important. Therefore, the area was heavily mined in the 1940s. Many mining towns were abandoned.
