Western United States Road Map – The western United States constitutes the largest of the five US states, covering 4,851,699 square kilometers (1,873,252 sq mi) and consisting of 13 states. The region makes up about half of the total land area of the United States.
The size of the region also contributes to the greatest geological diversity. Most of the deserts of the country lie in that tract, as the highest mountains of the country, temperate rains, great plains, and many mountains.

Alaska is the state in the western United States with the largest total land area and the smallest population. The state was the 49th state to join the United States in 1959, and the region was previously mostly controlled by Russia.
Before the establishment of the colony, many natives called the area that is now Alaska inhabited. Some of these are the Tlingit, Aleuts, Haida, Yup’ik, Alutiiq and Gwich’in. Many of these groups still live in the area.
As the most northerly and western state in the United States, Alaska is the only non-contiguous state in the region that is on the North American continent. Characterized by deserts, mountains, thousands of lakes, mountains and the Aleutians.

Arizona was next to last in the United States for admission, and the 48th state overall. It is located in the southern part of the country and shares a border with the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California. Geographically, Arizona has different elevations that affect the local climate. The state is home to deserts at a lower elevation in the south, which see mild winters and very hot summers. Hawaii was the 50th and last state to join the United States in 1959, after Alaska. It had been a territory of the United States since 1898, after western traders overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893.

The state of Idaho is located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America, although it is the only state in this region without any coastline. It shares a small border with Canada to the north and with six other states to the east, south and west.

Some of the major contributors to Idaho’s economy are the food processing, lumber production and electronics manufacturing industries. The capital and most famous city of Idaho is Boise, located in the southwest corner of the state.

Montana is located in the northern part of the United States, bordering Northern Canada as well as four other states. It is the fourth largest city in the country and is often called “Big Sky Country” by its honorary nickname.
